Optimisation of Heating Systems 101

Before any renewable heating systems are integrated into a heating system, the system operation must first be optimised otherwise the potential benefits of the great technology might never be realised.

By the end of this Module the students shall be able to carry out heating system optimisation so as to reduce the energy consumption of the existing system, they shall be able to diagnose system malfunctions and communicate the causes of these malfunctions with the client in an effective, professional and businesslike manner.

On completion of this Training Module and with respect to domestic dwellings trainees will be able to:
  1. Understand the context and requirement for system optimisation
  2. Promote a ‘whole system’ approach to heating systems.
  3. Understand the effect of installing TRV’s (Thermostatic radiator valves) on the system pump.
  4. Analyze energy consumption of a variable speed ‘A’ rated pumps Vs ‘C/D’ rated fixed speed pumps.
  5. Properly dimension and balance / commission heating systems (using calculation aids) so as to increase energy efficiency (and hence reducing pumping requirements)
  6. Use calculation aids to help with the heat loss calculations of dwellings.
  7. Familiarization with the relevant Building Regulations
  8. Size domestic hot water systems. (New storage temperature for hot water systems has been revised to 50oC and implication for Legionnaires Disease
  9. Understand the difference between a constant temperature DHW circuit and a weather compensated radiator circuit.
  10. Understand condensing boiler technology and its control requirements and the advantages of underfloor heating
  11. Emitter size.
  12. Communication Skills. The promotion of effective communication with the client in a businesslike and professional manner.
